Over the Road Winterizing Checklist for Your Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, Mack, or Freightliner Semi Truck

Winter can have the toughest wear and tear on your Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, Mack, Freightliner, and other heavy duty, over the road trucks. Winterizing is not only good for your budget by keeping your truck in first-rate working condition to continue with day-to-day business; it’s also a matter of safety for you as a professional over the road driver. The key is to be proactive when it comes to the maintenance of your heavy duty truck. Begin with preparing a checklist for annual use and make updates to it as needed.

Tires, belts, hoses and wipers are more apt to fail during harsh winter weather conditions. Cracks and bulges in belts and hoses can indicate weak spots and should be replaced. Fluids such as antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid and power steering fluid help the vehicle perform at its best, especially in the winter. Using a winterized wiper fluid will help to remove icy buildup and will not freeze in cold temperatures. A winter fuel additive and maintenance are also a concern to avoid gelling leading to fuel pump or injectors failures. Check other components such as the air compressor, air dryer system, air lines, electrical system, alternator, starter and batteries. Verify that there are no loose, exposed or hanging wires, especially where ice and snow can get to them. Don’t forget to make sure the cab is in working order. Check the heater system and inspect the vents to make sure they are functioning properly. Be prepared for a cold weather emergency. Carry food that does not have to be prepared, water, blankets, a first aid kit and any other survival supplies you may need. The exterior of your truck should not be overlooked. Ice, snow and salt can be harmful to the external components of the truck. Washing and waxing the body of the truck before bad weather hits can help keep it protected. Regular washes throughout the winter months can help with continued prevention of damages.
